Your character's armor is an important part of Final Fantasy 14, and looking your best is even more important. Whether you're matching a piece of armor to your hair color or going for an overall color scheme, you'll definitely be dying to change your armor's color as soon as possible.

If you want to revamp your character in FFXIV, changing your race, gender, or other features, here's exactly how you can do it.

Unlocking and using dyes is rather straightforward, but only if you know where to get started. Let's take a look at how to unlock dyes, and how you can use them to bring your fashion game to the next level.

Updated July 12, 2024: The recent launch of Dawntrail has brought the addition of a second Dye channel to many pieces of armor, giving you even more freedom when coloring your clothes. We've updated this guide with everything you need to know about unlocking and using Dyes for your items.

To unlock access to dyes and dyeing, you will need to complete the level 15 quest 'Color Your World', which can be accepted from Sywrgeim in Vesper Bay, Western Thanalan (X:12.6, Y:14.3).

To complete this quest, you will need to bring her Orange Juice, which can be purchased from Katherine in Ul'dah - Steps of Thal (X:13.8, Y:9.8), or from another player on the Market Board.

After delivering the Orange Juice, you will unlock the Dying system.

To change the color of your gear, you will need items called Dyes. Each time you change the color of something, you will use up a Dye item. Additionally, to remove a Dye from an item, you will need a different item called Terebinth.

Dyes of all colors can be found all over Eorzea. If you're looking for some basic colors, you can buy the following dyes from NPCs for a small amount of gil.

You can also purchase dyes from vendors of the A Realm Reborn Allied Societies. Each vendor and the colors of dyes they sell are listed below.

Vendor

Location

Dye Colors

Sylphic Vendor

East Shroud (X:22.3, Y:26.3)

Brown, Green

Kobold Vendor

Outer La Noscea (X:21.6, Y:17.8)

Brown, Green

Amalj'aa Vendor

Southern Thanalan (X:23.3, Y:14.1)

Yellow, Blue, Purple

Sahagin Vendor

Western La Noscea (X:16.9, Y:22.4)

Red, Blue, Purple

Ixal Vendor

North Shroud (X:24.9, Y:22.7)

Green, Blue, Grey

Additionally, you can craft a few Dyes when you reach level 30. To craft dyes, you will need a pigment of the corresponding color, which you can collect as a Miner or Botanist in specific areas.

Here are the Dye colors you can create with each type of pigment.

The most common way of collecting dyes is to purchase them from other players through the Market Board. Basic colors aren't too expensive, but higher-end hues will have you shelling out your gil.

Before you buy on the Market Board, make sure you can't get the Dye in a cheaper way, like from an NPC, especially because some players know that others will pay for convenience, and end up listing their dyes for far more than they're worth.

In order to dye your gear, you will first have to check if it can be dyed. On the item you want to dye, check the top right corner for a small colored circle. If this icon is present, that means the item can be dyed. If there is no circle, you'll have to keep the item's color as is.

If the equipment has a Glamour applied to it, the icon will be a plus symbol, rather than a circle.

From there, selecting the Dye option will bring you to the Dying window. Here, you can preview what the item will look like in any color you select, which is useful for choosing a color before making any commitments. Although you can see every color in the game in the preview window, you can only use a selected color if you have that Dye in your inventory.

After you've chosen a color, select the Dye option, and the Dye will be applied to your gear.

For some pieces of equipment, you can also add a second Dye. Swapping over to the Dye 2 tab will let you choose another color that will apply to a different component of the gear. In the example above, Dye 1 represents the shirt component of the Metian Vest, while Dye 2 represents the cape.

You can also select two Dyes as your Favored Dyes. If you then select the Switch to Favored Dyes option, you can quickly and easily apply your Favored Dyes to your items. The undo and redo buttons can also be used to quickly swap between colors for comparison purposes.

Now you're one step closer to becoming an Eorzea fashion icon. Or, apply your new skills to the weekly Fashion Report and start raking in the MGP.

Your trusty chocobo steed is more than just a mount in FFXIV, it can be a battle companion too! Here's how to unlock your very own chocobo companion.

Despite what the numbers say, Dawntrail isn’t the worst Final Fantasy XIV expansion.

Are we the baddies?

Final Fantasy 14 healers have reached breaking point, going on strike to protest changes coming in Dawntrail.

The Scions have grown too powerful, it's time for Final Fantasy 14 to take them down a peg or two.

Here's everything you need to know about the Moogle Treasure Trove event in FFXIV, including how many tomestones those sweet Donut Earrings will cost!

Many players are unhappy with Wuk Lumat in particular, but a lot of discussions about them are filled with transphobia.
